Steve Christensen, executive director of the Responsible Battery Coalition, an association of companies, academics and organizations advocating for conscientious battery management, said batteries are essential as grids are modernized to meet booming demand.
“Batteries allow you to — in a very efficient, cost-effective way — store energy, almost like a savings account,” he said.
The potential for batteries to buy time extends from milliseconds to decades. That's because there is an unprecedented rush to build energy generation sources and transmission lines to support the increasing number of data centers that power artificial intelligence and other large load entities that are swarming Texas.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, the statewide grid operator, projected in mid-2024 that statewide demand would double by the end of the decade as data centers, weather and population drive up usage.
